Winter League Langham
After
suffering drought conditions then weeks of now and ice, we finally managed to stage a match on Maltings Farm Lake. Fortunately,
the huge pile of sugar beet that was covering the car park has been cleared. While the water level has recovered to normal
winter depth, the water is clear enough to see bottom meaning that the fish were not in their usual haunts. The 11 peg
match was won with a 53lb haul of carp up to 8lb by Bill Keogh on peg 18. Bill also suceeded in smashing a top 2 and
was broken by an animal which made it to the trees. Martin "What If" Edlin drew peg 15, declared
ruefully that " there's nothing in that peg. I'll be leaving early to watch The Arsenal" . He was,
surprisingly, still there at the whistle to weigh in 36lb of carp. I hope collecting some money made up for Arsenal's
cup exit. Peter Bareham pulled peg 4 from the hat. This delighted Jon Clement of the "Clacton Boys"
who normally gets the peg. Pete, however dragged 2 decent carp from the snags to weigh 17lb + to take 3rd. Surprise
of the day? Mr Burge blowing out on peg 20. Can't win 'em all Phil!
Fur & Feather - Melton Match Lake Given
the recent winter weather this match was definitely not fished in traditional Christmas conditions. In fact, Oilskin
and Brolly would be a far better description for the match. Torrential rain and galeforce SouthWesterly wind greeted the hardy
15 who made their way to the far side of Woodbridge. However, it wasn't too cold although I can't remember seeing
my brolly ribs bent into 'U's before. As it turned out I spent the day next to Rick Leeds who netted
9 Carp for a winning 50lb. Mid-day saw a complete change as the storm blew over leaving blue sky and a gentle breeze. Graham
Pinnock can 2nd with 35lb with John Lucas and Dave from Breakaway Tackle taking the sections with 20lb+ each.
Pinnock
Prevails! – (from the “comfy” peg)
What is
the 1st thing you do when deciding on your fishing agenda? Ask,”what bait do I need”?; “what
time do I go”? Neither. I bet it’s “what’s the weather forecast”? So with that in mind a quick
check on the BBC website confidently announced “Light Rain” for Sunday 22nd Nov. Liars! The BBC
Weather Department is full of pathological liars trying to lure you to your peg in shirt sleeves and shorts and a flimsy umbrella
for company. That’s the view of this Match Secretary who spent 45mins battling to hold on to umbrella, kit
and life when the heavens opened and the wind howled across Suffolk Water Park. Horizontal stair-rods driven by nuclear strength
wind. The BBC version of light rain. That aside, our little band of hardy souls, each now fully qualified in self-harming by BBC weather,
set up around the “Doughnut”. I should say “eventually set up” after a monumental c*ck-up over the
pegs numbers- (sorry Martin and Graham. Stand in the corner Malcolm). With no carp to worry about, out came
the light elastics and non-forged hooks. Poles, feeders, wagglers. We had the lot out! For most, it was fun(ish) although
the 2” Perch did start to get on your nerves after a while. A few decent Roach and Rudd found their way to the net.
The odd Tench and lots of small skimmers at least until “Him up there” turned his washing machine on. It wasn’t
quite the same after that. A few called time and headed for home early. By 2:30 the sun poked through the clouds so we could
weigh-in. And it came to pass that Graham Pinnock topped the rankings from the most comfortable peg with Mt Lucas
2nd and yours truly collecting his £10 back for 3rd. We look forward to another visit on a day
when hooking a 1oz skimmer at 7m doesn’t feel like you have got into a F15 taking off. I‘m now off to
bribe the BBC weather reporters to forecast heavy rain and hurricanes for the 6th December. If they publish that
I know I can safely leave the umbrella at home.
Match Pit 8th November
Using Pegs 8 to 26, Gary Page triumphed
from peg 20 with 6lb 11ozs of Roach and Perch. Allan Jones was second from peg 10 with 6lb 5ozs with 3 decent Perch and a
few Roach. John Lucas on peg 12 was 3rd. Most spent their time trying to stop the predators snaffeling their catch. The
Perch were particularly active chasing fish half their size.
Sunday 4th October. Hintlesham Farm
The match was
well attended with 17 anglers including our very own Mr David Mullett. The weather was mild and sunny with resonable catches;
a fair day all considered. Ricky Leeds managed to draw the same end peg he fished on his last visit and bagged 1st spot
with 26lb 13ozs. Phil Burge was only narrowly pushed into 2nd place with 26lb 10ozs.
21st September. Pairs Match - Match Pit
A sense of excitment was evident in the car
park before the draw. Following the last match held on this water in which the Bream showed in numbers and, after the poor
results at Tinnevelds, hopes ran high. Clear water and a strong sun however didn't help our cause. The Bream we hoped
for decided not to play ball. However, fish were caught and a few lost to the attendant Jack Pike that appear as soon as a
few Roach are enticed into the swim. Some 1lb + Perch were weighed in but few large Roach Amazingly the
top two weights were recorded by one drawn pair and 3rd & 4th weights by another pair so it didn't take much working
out to declare the winners. Our new Pairs Champs are Trevor Ward & Noel Woods, and Runners Up, Jim Minns and John
Chesham who also caught the only Bream of the day. Trevor had top weigt of 9lb 2ozs. My personal highlights were watching
the rod bend as I attempted to save a 2oz Roach from a 3lb snapper, counting the grass snakes swimming through peg 15
and observing the Stoat that joined me for a short while. Oh I forgot the Sparrowhawk. Yep you guessed. I didn't
have a busy day.
13th September W W Wix Shield - Tinnevelds
Twelve
hardy souls decended on "Tinny's" believing that it couldn't fish that bad again. Well technically it didn't
if you compare top weight but again only three weighed in more than 1lb. Andy Moss (5lb 8oz), won with one carp from
peg 5; Gary Page was 2nd with 3lb 5oz on peg 11 and Graham Pinnock 3rd on Peg 13 with 2lb 11ozs.
Points Cup Finale - 30th August, Tinnevelds
Back to Tinnevelds
for the final Round. The match was scheduled for Langham with the field restricted to those left in the running but a visit
to check water levels the day before initiated a late change of venue.
Unfortunately it was a case of
"wish we hadn't got out of bed". The fish were all near the surface and not in the mood for feeding. Top weight
on the day was a miserable 1lb 8oz by Simon Stanmore on peg 9. Only three of the thirteen fishing broke the 1lb barrier.
Phil Burge hung on to win the trophy from Graham Pinnock.
Match Pit Sunday 23rd August 2009
After years of lack of Bream showing
up in matches they suddenly decide to put in an appearance in numbers. The lucky angler was Graham Dryden (CPS) who pole fished
peg 12 at 9m and offering sweetcorn on the hook tempted 11 Bream for 75lb 5ozs. Second was Ken Rudd(CPS), peg 15, who
found 4 Bream and some "bits" for 29lb 9ozs. 3rd Frank Brunning, Peg 13, with 2 Bream. Everyone caught roach
but we were surprised of the lack of large perch whihc I am sure will start showing soon. The disappointment? No Tench which
means we haven't weighed in a tench on the Match Pit for over 3 years. Despite being hammered by CPS on total wieght we
had agreed to run the match on points resulting in CPTAC winning 78 points to 93. We were also pleased to see some younger
bream of around 3lb and skimmers of various sizes. On that basis we know that the Roach, Perch and Bream are breeding
but no sign of any small carp or tench.
Sunday 9th Tinnevelds Lake
14 anglers competed in the 2nd Round of the Points Cup. Winner (again!) Mr Burge. Phil's 2 carp saw
off 2nd placed Bill Keough who landed one carp and lost a bigger one - ( story backed up by those who saw his elastic going
on a tour of the lake ). In all, 4 carp were landed but only one tench. Rudd, Roach and Skimmers up in the water with the
usual eels being taken near bottom made up the other bags.
With 2 wins and one round left Phil takes overall 1st place with the rest fighting for 2nd place.
J.A.Gray Trophy - Match Pit 19th July
16 anglers turned out to take on the Match Pit which had produced nothing for the Saturday
night boys. However, everyone caught with Pete Bareham taking the Trophy with 3 Bream and a few Roach from Peg 27. The car
park bank produced a few more of the "old" Bream with Andy Moss taking 2nd place from peg 29. He landed a Bream of around
10lb to go with a few pounds of Roach. Matt mason's 6lb 7oz Bream wasn't enough to beat dad Andy who had 11lb 4oz of mainly
Roach from peg 15.
Frank Brunning also framed with his 11lb + net of roach from peg 4. Noel Woods also
broke 10lb from peg 26, his net also including a single Bream.
Phil Burge Retains Summer League Title
Despite a poor performance the previous Thursday at Tinnevelds, Phil pipped Andy Mason's
total of 42 points by claiming 2nd spot at Langham in the final Summer League Match. John Clement won on the night from peg
16. Andy had matched Phil's record of two series wins and a second place but had to miss the final match.
3-In-A-Row for
Mr Burge
A carp bag of 29lb 10oz from Peg 4 on last Thursday 12 peg Summer League -
3rd Round Match keeps Phil ahead of the pack in his bid to retain the Summer League Trophy.
This was followed up with 36lb 2oz off Peg 9 on the same water to take top weight in
the 6 a-side Team Match against Alresford A.A. last Sunday. Anyone who thinks Phil's only forte is the Method Feeder would
have been impessed with his margin pole technique which allowed him to extract several carp from under the trees.
Unfortunately, his skill wasn't matched by the rest of the team with A.A.A. winning
99lb to 77lb.
And finally, Andy Moss set, what we believe is a new Club record, by breaking two
poles in one match (Ouch!).
The "Pensioner" Strikes Again!
Phil Burge weighed in a unbeatable 46lb - more than the other 9 competitors together,
to win the Points Cup 1st Round match on the Cricket pit.
Phil landed a Carp of 14ib, x2 Bream and x7 Tench from peg 4 using a feeder. Not bad
for someone 80 this year.
Andy Moss landed a 12lb Carp and Tench to finish 2nd with Trevor Ward taking 3rd
with x2 Tench and some silvers.
Phil also won the 1st Summer League match at Tinnevelds and finished 2nd last Thusday
at Langham.
